The Pet Battle System, introduced with Mists of Pandaria, works much like a secondary profession and any player can participate. Players will be able utilize their current non-combat pets or capture new wild pets to level them and battle them against others. These pets will even be tradable, even through the Auction House.
The Pet Journal will be updated to support this feature, showing pets on the left and their stats/abilities on the right.
PvP pet battles are designed to be "fun and causal", only tracking the number of wins and not the number of losses.[1]
To be able to use the Pet Battle System, one needs to visit a Battle Pet Trainer.

Leveling pets
To level the pets they will need to battle with other pets. They will earn experience by winning these battles and over time learn new abilities to battle with. These pets will be capable of learning six abilities, but can only use three during battles.
The currently planned cap is level 25.[2]
Battling
Players can battle with their pets in solo matches or teams of up to three pets. These battles will be turn-based, rather than in real-time like World of Warcraft. A feature similar to the Dungeon Finder is planned to queue up for random battles, but players will also be able to battle other players near them as well, like the dueling system.
Some pets may have some different abilities or feature cosmetic differences, but no player will ever have a significant advantage based simply on the rarity of a pet.[2]
When fighting another player, you cannot see the other players name or communicate with them.[1]
Customizing
Companion pets will be fully customizable, from giving them a name to wearing items and the abilities they can use.
Wild pets
- See also: Wild pets category
Wild pets are new "critter" like creatures that will appear throughout Azeroth, with some being more rare than others. Weather and time of day could play into when the creatures appear as well. For example some wild pets won't appear unless it's raining or night time, possibly even both.
There is planned to be one unique pet per zone.[2]
- Notes
- Basically all critters that are found throughout the zones will be considered wild pets and capable of being tamed.

Please add any available information to this section.
Master abilities
Besides having normal abilities, players will have the chance to battle masters, located throughout the world. By defeating them in a pet battle, the masters will teach them a master ability. This ability can be taught to any pet.
Influence
The most obvious influence in this system is of course the widely popular video game series, Pokémon. However Pokeballs will not be introduced.[2]
